Unconditional positive regard, a concept introduced by the humanist psychologist Carl Rogers, involves a consistent acknowledgement of a person's intrinsic human value, regardless of their professed beliefs and behaviours (Rogers, 1942).
Perhaps one of the most important skills of this work is to adopt a beginner’s mind. Psychedelic medicines can create an extremely wide range of experiences. Even if the same person takes the same dose several times, it is highly likely that each experience will be vastly different, especially with the classic psychedelics like psilocybin, LSD, and ayahuasca. Keeping this in mind, it is important not to approach this work from the lens that you are an expert as it can hinder your ability to be attuned to the present moment. This is another important skill that will be discussed shortly which health professionals should have.
