This module began by discussing how psychedelics function by targeting some of the root causes of mental health conditions compared with traditional psychopharmacotherapy, which focuses more on symptom management. We discussed some key mechanisms of action from a high level including the REBUS model, neuroplasticity, and psychological flexibility. Finally, we looked at how psychedelics, especially MDMA, work to extinguish fear and reduce activity in the amygdala where our stress response takes place.
