Module 2

Conclusion

Module Summary

Through our exploration of the history of psychedelic medicines throughout the ages, we learned about the use of sacred plant medicines by Indigenous Peoples since time immemorial. We then looked at the first wave of psychedelic research which included the discovery of LSD by Albert Hoffman, the resynthesis of MDMA by Alexander Shulgin, the synthesis of ketamine, and the introduction of psilocybin-producing mushrooms to Westerners. We also discussed the Controlled Substances Act and the War on Drugs. We will be revisiting the War on Drugs in a later module to learn about how this policy was used as a tool to justify systemic racism.
