Welcome to Week 7!
Please take some time to review the structure of this module to understand what tasks you’re required to do, what virtual face-to-face sessions you’re required to attend, and what evaluations you need to submit. Time estimates for each activity have been provided to help you plan your time this week.
Please work through the following content prior to attending the virtual face-to-face sessions.
Module 7 online content
Please ensure that you attend the following virtual face-to-face sessions to practice some of the key skills you have learned this week.
Thursday December 1, 2022 at 9:00 AM PT/12:00 PM ET
To join the live session, please return to the learning plan, select the live session you're trying to join, select the toggle button, and select Join. The join button will be hidden until 1 hour before the session begins. Under the Content tab in the live session module, you will find a detailed agenda for the live session. If there are any notes or handouts from the session, they can also be found under the Content tab.
You should meet with your group after the virtual face-to-face session at whatever time is most convenient for your group to practise the following exercises:
This week you are invited to choose a recent significant event that has an emotional charge: positive or challenging (e.g. a loss, a change (a relationship breakup, a move, career change, achievement, a psychedelic experience, a powerful dream).
Please bring this event to mind by first closing your eyes and turning the attention inward to the body and breath for a few minutes. Next, contemplate this event and seeing what comes up in the body (sensations), thoughts, images, emotions, urges or impulses, and behaviours.
In your practice groups, take turns being the client, health professional, and observer. The health professional's job is to help the client meet their relevant integration by using inquiry. Recalling what we learned in the module on Integration Sessions, consider what will signal which of these needs to be the focus. For example, dysregulation may show as rapid speech, shallow breathing, heightened affect or agitation, body movement, or others. The need to normalize may show as the client wanting reassurance or advice around the anomalous experience. The need for meaning making may show as confusion and difficulty regarding making sense of the experience and a heightened need to do so.
As a health professional, ask the client:
What did you notice when you brought this event to mind? Listen for descriptions of sensations, thoughts (sentences or images), labelling of emotion (single words). Try to help the client track the experience and its components.
Listen for when the client goes into storytelling and invite them back to staying close to the direct experience.
Watch for the different integration needs and explore ways to address them.
Debrief and reflect as a group on what you noticed and what happened.
