Moving Around the Room

While clients will likely spend much of their Medicine Sessions seated or lying down, some clients may want to get up and move during the session.

When this occurs, health professionals can:

  • Help the client to get up

  • Direct them to an area of the room with enough space for them to move

  • Check to ensure they have adequate balance and stability to support themselves

When appropriate, health professionals may also use therapeutic techniques (i.e., mirroring, exaggeration, touch) to help the client process physical sensations. Once whatever movement is being called for is complete, health professionals can direct clients back to share more about their experience and to resume their inward journey.

Standing

If clients want to stand but are not requiring other body movement, health professionals may encourage clients to continue to focus inward from the standing position or direct their attention to various parts of the room that are inspirational or beautiful.

Note

Health professionals can support clients to explore any movement that their body may be calling for as long as it doesn’t harm them, the space, or the health professionals.
