Psychedelic-assisted therapy poses unique and important ethical challenges and risks for several reason:
There is a remarkably enhanced power differential between practitioner and client when a client is in an altered state of consciousness
Psychedelics are known to acutely enhance client suggestibility
Context (known as set and setting) impacts psychedelic-assisted therapy outcome
Outcomes may be enduring and dramatically life-changing
Health professionals must cultivate and maintain a high level of self-inquiry and self-awareness, including uncovering implicit biases and viewpoints they might unintentionally insert into the client’s consciousness against their consent and right to autonomy and self-determination, which includes freedom of consciousness, religion, and belief.
Numinus has developed an internal Code of Ethics for psychedelic-assisted therapy, based upon the MAPS PBC Code of Ethics for MDMA-Assisted Therapy.
Our holistic psychotherapy model sees people as inherently whole and capable of healing given optimal conditions and seeks to empower them with the knowledge and the tools they need to achieve the results that they desire.
Within the Integrative and Transformative Mental Wellness model which we will learn about shortly, there are seven essential Guiding Principles. Watch this video on the next page for a brief overview on these principles.
These guiding principles are not only a reflection of how we engage with clients but also representative of how we aspire to connect with all members of our health community and beyond.
